The experience
The ride starts at the stables and follows a path away from the main roads toward Monolithos, the black sand beach on Santorini's coast. Once you reach the beach, you continue riding along the water's edge with unobstructed views of the sea and the white cliffs rising above. The evergreen vineyards that surround the inland sections are trained in a basket-like form, a detail you'll notice as you approach the tranquil plain on the return leg.
The route back takes you through volcanic ravines and natural caves carved into the landscape. A short stop at a small traditional church gives you time to take photos and step down from the horse. This is the only break in the ride itself. The real pause comes at the end, when you return to the stables and sit with a glass of the owner's homemade wine, surrounded by aromatic citrus trees. Vangelis, who owns the horses and the farm, is there to meet you and talk about how he built this operation around his passion for the animals and the land.
