Hike through a narrow gorge at your own pace, then choose your afternoon

A private tour from Chania to Imbros Gorge combines a self-guided three-hour hike through a shaded canyon with a choice of Frangokastello Beach, winery or olive oil tasting afterward. The driver drops you at the gorge entrance and picks you up at the exit, then takes you to whichever option you select. Most of the trail stays in shade on a narrow path that is easy to follow.

The experience

Imbros Gorge sits south of the Lefka Ori mountains and takes around three hours to cross on foot. The hike starts from Imbros village, where your driver will drop you at the entrance. You walk the gorge on your own (the driver does not join you), and the narrow trail is straightforward enough that you won't lose the way. Most of the route stays shaded, which matters on a Crete day. Bring enough water and a hat. The gorge is smaller than the famous Samaria Gorge but offers the same kind of scenery that draws nature lovers and wildlife watchers. The walk suits children from age ten and up.

After you exit the gorge, your driver picks you up and you choose what comes next. You can spend an hour at Frangokastello Beach, or visit a local winery or olive oil producer for a tasting. The entrance fee and any tasting runs around 20 euros per person and is paid on the spot. If you want lunch at a restaurant in Frangokastello village, that is another 20 euros per person. The round trip from Chania takes around two hours of driving each way, so plan for a full day. Tastings do not run from November through March.
