Learn what separates quality olive oil from the rest in two hours

A two-hour olive oil seminar in Metaggitsi, Halkidiki teaches you how to taste, evaluate and buy olive oil like a professional. The village, known as Halkidiki's "Olive Oil Village," grows the local Galani variety: 90% of which becomes oil. You'll answer the questions that matter: how to recognize quality, why prices vary, which oil to use at home, and what makes one bottle worth buying over another. The seminar runs Tuesdays and Fridays in German, Mondays and Thursdays in English, and ends with a participation certificate and a 100ml bottle of local oil to take home.

The experience

Two hours in a small olive grove behind the farm shop is where the seminar happens, weather permitting. You'll learn how olive oil is produced, what makes one oil high-quality and another not, and how to spot the difference yourself: a skill that works anywhere in the world once you know what to look for. The instructor walks through the characteristics that matter: color, aroma, taste, and the signs that tell you whether an oil is worth the price tag. Not all expensive oils are good. After this seminar, you won't be fooled.

Water, bread and cold traditional snacks come with the class, so you're not tasting on an empty stomach. You'll receive a 100ml bottle of the local Galani oil to take home, along with a brochure and a certificate of participation. If you want to buy more (olive oil, olives, honey or cosmetics made locally), the farm shop sits right there, though nothing beyond the tasting bottle is included in the seminar price.
