The experience
The drive from Athens takes you through Levadia and into Arachova, a mountain town known for its bright handwoven carpets, before arriving at Delphi. At the foot of Mount Parnassos, the Pan-Hellenic sanctuary sits within the twin rocks of the Phaedriades, the spot where ancient Greeks believed the center of the world lay. Your guide walks you through the archaeological site, explaining how the Delphic Oracle (regarded as the most trustworthy in the ancient world) shaped decisions of cities, rulers and ordinary people for centuries. Between the sixth and fourth centuries BC, the priestess Pythia delivered prophecies here that were interpreted by Apollo's priests and spread the Oracle's fame across the Mediterranean.
The Delphi Archaeological Museum holds treasures that anchor the day's narrative. Among them is the bronze Charioteer, a statue dedicated to Apollo in 478 BC by the tyrant Polyzalos after he won the chariot-race at the Pythian Games: the second most important athletic competition in ancient Greece after the Olympics. The statue exemplifies the "severe" Attic style and is the work of a major artist whose name is lost. Your guide points out these pieces and the context that makes them matter, using whisper devices so everyone hears clearly even in crowded galleries.
A four-course meal is included, and the air-conditioned vehicle has free WiFi for the journey. Hotel pickup and drop-off apply to selected hotels in Athens. The guide distributes entry tickets when you arrive. On the return, you stop in Arachova for photos before heading back to the city. French-language tours run on selected Wednesdays as a bilingual tour with both English and French guides. During winter, all tours operate in English only.
