The experience

The e-bike lets you cover the 32 kilometers of Crete's inland terrain without fighting the hills on your own. You start at Ammoudara beach west of Heraklion and head south, passing the University of Crete before turning west into the vineyards. The motor handles the climbs (the route takes you up to 440 meters), so you can focus on the landscape and the villages themselves rather than the effort of getting there. A local guide rides with you and speaks English, German or Greek.

The five villages are the real stops. Stavrakia sits at 240 meters with views of Mount Juktas to the east. Agios Myron, at 440 meters, holds a 4th-century church and tomb of one of Crete's first bishops, plus a cave where locals say Saint Myron's holy water still flows. The village clock tower, built for a church but relocated to the school, is visible from almost everywhere around it. Pentamodi and Petrokefalo are smaller, built on narrow roads with traditional houses. Voutes, the last stop before you head back, sits at 240 meters and has taverns if you want to eat there instead of at the end. The whole ride takes three hours, with breaks built in at each village.

You return to Ammoudara beach in about 25 minutes downhill, where you can swim and cool off before the Greek meze: fruits, wine and raki come with the tour. The e-bike, helmet, gloves and a bicycle bag are provided.
