Discover Scuba Diving is a PADI beginner course in Messinia where you learn basic safety skills and make your first dive with an instructor in shallow water, all equipment provided. The program runs two and a half hours from the dive center, covering theory, practice and your first underwater experience. Minimum age is 8 years old. The course is not recommended for pregnant travelers or those with cardiovascular concerns.

The experience

You start at the dive center with paperwork and a briefing that covers everything about the equipment and how to stay safe underwater. The instructor walks you through how the gear works and how to move around once you're in it. This is not a lecture. It's hands-on from the start, with the instructor showing you each piece and how it fits.

Once you're ready, you move into shallow water to practice the basic safety skills: how to breathe, how to clear your mask, how to control your buoyancy. The instructor stays with you the whole time. When you feel ready, and only when you feel ready, you take your first dive into deeper water. You're not alone. Your instructor is right there, and you're exploring at your own pace. After you surface, you learn how to care for the equipment and talk through what you just experienced.

The whole program takes two and a half hours from the moment you meet at the center. Bottled water is included, and so is all the SCUBA equipment: tanks, wetsuit, mask, fins, everything you need. Your guide speaks English, Spanish or Greek depending on what works for your group.
