The experience

The tour leaves your Athens hotel and heads to Delphi, the ancient religious center of Greece where the oracle of Apollo delivered prophecies at the omphalos: the navel of the world. You'll walk the main sanctuary, then visit Athina Pronaia, the temple complex that most tour groups bypass but appears in every photograph of Delphi online. The Delphi Archaeological Museum holds the Charioteer, one of the finest surviving Greek statues, and the Sphinx of the Naxians from 560 BC. A driver and tour leader who knows the sites handles all the navigation and context. You arrive at your hotel in the morning and leave from there at the end of the day.

Between the archaeological sites, you stop in Arachova, a village built into a mountainside, for photographs and to stretch. Lunch happens at a local restaurant away from the tourist zones of Delphi and Arachova: the kind of place where residents eat. Drinks are included. The route then takes you to Hosios Loukas, a walled monastery a thousand years old and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, where Byzantine mosaics and frescoes survive in the katholikon church. The monastery sits in a quiet location near Distomo. A coffee stop there breaks up the drive back to Athens.

The tour runs 10 hours door to door. You'll walk the Delphi sanctuary and museum, climb to Athina Pronaia, and move through the monastery grounds. The vehicle is a brand-new car or van, and bottled water travels with you. Hotel pickup and drop-off are included. If you're arriving by cruise ship or flying out, the driver can drop you at the port or airport instead.

Top questions

What is the Charioteer, and where do I see it on this tour?

The Charioteer is a bronze statue from the 5th century BC that once belonged to a larger complex of a chariot pulled by four horses. It's housed in the Delphi Archaeological Museum, which is included on the tour itinerary.

Why do so many tour groups skip Athina Pronaia?

Athina Pronaia requires a separate walk from the main Delphi sanctuary and isn't on the standard route most agencies take. This tour includes it as a deliberate stop because it's the most photographed view of Delphi online and most visitors miss it in person.

Is the lunch included in the price, and where do we eat?

Yes, lunch and drinks are included. You eat at a local restaurant away from the tourist areas of Delphi and Arachova: the kind of place where residents go, not where tour groups typically stop.

How much walking is involved at each site?

The Delphi sanctuary involves moderate walking over uneven ground with some elevation change. Athina Pronaia requires a separate walk uphill. The monastery is walked at a leisurely pace on level ground. The 10-hour duration includes all travel time, stops and meals.

Can I be dropped off somewhere other than my hotel?

Yes. While hotel pickup and drop-off are standard, you can ask to be dropped at a cruise ship port or the airport instead if your schedule requires it.
