The experience
The drive from Athens takes two and a half hours, climbing into the mountains where Delphi sits on the slopes of Mount Parnassus. Once there, you have free time to walk the Sacred Way, the ancient processional path, and stand before the Temple of Apollo, where the Pythia oracle once delivered prophecies to kings and commoners. The site spreads across the hillside: the Tholos of Athena Pronaia, a circular sanctuary with restored Doric columns; the ancient theater carved into the slope; and the Treasury of the Athenians, built to commemorate the victory at Marathon. The Delphi Archaeological Museum, 500 meters from the main site, houses the Charioteer of Delphi and other treasures that bring the sanctuary to life.
After lunch at a traditional Greek tavern in Arachova (a mountain town known for its steep cobbled streets and local textiles), the route continues to Hosios Loukas Monastery. Founded in the early 10th century by the hermit Luke of Steiris, the monastery sits on the slopes of Mount Helicon and is one of the most important monuments of Middle Byzantine architecture. The relics of St. Luke, said to have exuded myron, a healing oil, drew pilgrims for centuries and funded the monastery's construction. The interior holds medieval mosaics and frescoes that survive from that era.

The vehicle is a modern minivan with air conditioning, WiFi, and bottled water. Fuel and tolls are included. Entry fees to the archaeological sites and museums are separate, as is a licensed guide if you want one inside the sites themselves.

What is the Temple of Apollo at Delphi, and why was it important in ancient Greece?
The Temple of Apollo occupied the most important position in Delphi's sanctuary and housed the famous oracle, the Pythia, who delivered prophecies to petitioners from across the Greek world. Built in the 4th century BC, it is the third temple constructed at the same location. According to ancient tradition, a sacred chasm beneath the site emitted vapors that the Pythia inhaled before uttering the oracles.
What will I see at Hosios Loukas Monastery?
Hosios Loukas Monastery is a walled complex featuring Byzantine mosaics, frescoes, and architectural details from the 10th century. The main shrine holds the tomb of St. Luke, the hermit who founded the monastery. The site sits on the slopes of Mount Helicon and is recognized as one of the most important monuments of Middle Byzantine art and architecture.
How much time do I have to explore Delphi itself?
The itinerary includes free time to walk the Sacred Way, visit the Temple of Apollo, the Tholos of Athena Pronaia, the ancient theater, and the Treasury of the Athenians.
