The experience
The drive from Athens takes about two hours, passing through small towns and villages as you climb toward Mount Parnassus. Your driver has deep local knowledge and handles all the navigation, so you can watch the landscape shift from lowland olive groves to mountain terrain. Once you arrive at Delphi, you move through the sites on your own schedule. There's no fixed itinerary or group pace to follow.
The Delphi Archaeological Museum holds the bronze Charioteer, the Naxian Sphinx, and the Statue of Antinoos, each one a window into how ancient Greeks saw themselves and their gods. From there you walk to the Sanctuary of Apollo Pythios, where the oracle once sat at the Omphalos: the navel of the earth, as the ancients called it. The Theatre sits higher up the slope. From its stone seats you look out over olive groves and mountains that stretch to the sea. The Sanctuary of Athena Pronaia, lower down, is the most photographed spot in Delphi and the reason most people bring a camera.
Lunch happens in the village of Delphi itself at a family-owned tavern with views down to the sea. A main course, appetizer, salad and local wine come with the meal. On the way back to Athens, you stop in Arachova, a stone village built into the Parnassus hillside, where you can walk the square, drink coffee or try one of the homemade ice creams the village is known for. The whole day runs seven to nine hours door to door.

What exactly is the Omphalos at Delphi?
The Omphalos, or "Navel of the Earth," is a stone marker at the Sanctuary of Apollo that ancient Greeks believed marked the center of the world. It sits at the site where the oracle delivered prophecies, and you'll see the ruins of the sanctuary built around it during your visit.
Do I need a separate ticket to enter the Delphi Archaeological Museum?
