Walk the fields of Maleme, pause at Tavronitis Bridge, reflect at war cemeteries with stories still echoing

You’ll walk through WWII history on Crete, from Maleme’s old airfield to Tavronitis Bridge and two moving war cemeteries. Expect honest stories from your local guide, small group company, snacks along the way, and moments that stick with you long after you’ve left those quiet hills behind.

Step-by-step itinerary

Explore key WWII Battle of Crete sites

  • Start tour at Maleme
  • Visit Tavronitis historical bridge
  • Visit German war cemetery
  • Visit British Commonwealth war cemetery

The Experience

You wake up in Chania and before you know it, there’s this quiet minivan humming through olive groves — not much chatter yet. Our guide, Nikos, had this way of pointing out little things I’d never have noticed: the way the morning light hits the hills near Maleme, or how the old airstrip is just... there. We stood where paratroopers landed in 1941. The grass was damp and smelled a bit earthy. I tried to imagine what it sounded like back then — now it’s just birds and far-off dogs barking.

We stopped at Tavronitis Bridge. It’s not grand or anything, but Nikos told us about how it was bombed and rebuilt more than once. There’s graffiti on one side (someone wrote “peace” in Greek), and I remember running my hand over the stone — cold even though the sun was out. Someone handed around snacks; I think they were local sesame bars? Sweet but kind of dry — made me laugh because I almost choked when Nikos started another story about a British pilot hiding nearby.

The German war cemetery sits on a hill above Maleme. It’s quiet up there, windier than below. Rows of dark crosses, and some visitors just standing still for ages. I didn’t expect to feel much but it hit me anyway — so many names I couldn’t pronounce. Later we visited the British Commonwealth cemetery too; white stones instead of black crosses, flowers tucked into corners by someone who must come often. There’s something about seeing both places in one day that makes you stop for a second longer than you meant to.

I keep thinking about that view from the cemetery hill — olive trees rolling out toward the sea and then nothing but blue sky above it all. You don’t really leave those stories behind when you get back in the van; they sort of follow you home for a while.

What’s included

Your day includes pickup and drop-off within Chania region, all entrance fees covered so there’s no awkward fumbling at gates, snacks plus bottled water for everyone (trust me you’ll want it), transport by comfy air-conditioned minibus or van, and an English-speaking local guide who actually knows these places inside out—no script-reading here.
