After Mires, the tour reaches the Messara Museum, which opened in 2023 and holds excavations from the plain itself—pottery, tools and fragments that trace the region from prehistory through the Middle Ages. The entry ticket here is a combination pass that also covers Gortys, just one kilometer away. Gortys was the capital of the Roman province of Crete and the archaeological site sprawls across fields and hillside, with standing columns, basilicas and inscribed stones from the Roman period.
