The experience

The bus leaves Plakias heading east toward Phaistos, where your guide handles the entrance fees and tickets at the gate. You walk the ruins of the second-largest Minoan palace in Crete and have time to absorb the scale of the site and what the guide explains about Minoan culture: the palace dates to around 1700 BCE and sits on a ridge overlooking the Messara Plain. From there the route continues to Mires, a working farmers market that stretches down an entire street. This is where you stop to browse, buy traditional Cretan products if you want, and grab snacks from the vendors. It is a real market, not a tourist version, and the pace is yours.

After Mires, the tour reaches the Messara Museum, which opened in 2023 and holds excavations from the plain itself: pottery, tools and fragments that trace the region from prehistory through the Middle Ages. The entry ticket here is a combination pass that also covers Gortys, just one kilometer away. Gortys was the capital of the Roman province of Crete and the archaeological site sprawls across fields and hillside, with standing columns, basilicas and inscribed stones from the Roman period. Your guide leads you through the site and explains what you are standing in front of. The return to Plakias closes the loop.
