Paddle into sea caves, then snorkel through shipwrecks and rock formations

Sea kayaking and snorkeling in West Crete with Fit in Crete pairs sit-on-top kayaks and snorkeling gear for a half-day on the water, suited to all ability levels. The guide chooses the location and sights based on your experience and the weather at the time, so the day adapts to what's possible. Contact the operator when booking to confirm your start time, location and whether you want kayaking, snorkeling or both activities combined.

The Experience

What makes this different from a beach snorkel is the kayak: you paddle into places swimmers can't reach. Sit-on-top kayaks are stable and forgiving, and the guide handles the route planning—you just paddle, dip into small sea caves along the shore, and then slip into the water to explore the underwater world. The rugged cliffs and rock formations of West Crete's coast create natural corridors and caverns both above and below the surface.

The snorkeling part takes you around rock formations, through sea caves and past shipwrecks, depending on conditions and where the guide takes you. You're swimming, not walking, so the full-body workout comes from the water itself. If the timing and wildlife cooperate, you might see the sea creatures that live in these spots—but the guide won't promise it, and that's the honest version. The whole activity runs about three hours, and you'll need at least a moderate level of fitness: paddling and swimming both demand it.

Snorkeling equipment and the kayak with safety gear are included; bring your own swimsuit and towel. Sun protection matters here—long sleeves, hat, sunscreen and glasses all help, and leggings work well too. The operator asks you to contact them when booking to nail down your specific start time and location, since the weather and your ability level shape where the day actually happens.

What’s included

  • Use of snorkeling equipment and sit-on-top sea kayak with safety gear.
  • experienced local guide who speaks English, Italian or Greek.

Top questions

Can I snorkel if I've never done it before?

Yes. Fit in Crete offers beginner snorkeling sessions, and the guide will teach you how to use the equipment. You can also combine snorkeling with a hike if you want a different kind of day on the water.

What's the difference between the kayaking and snorkeling parts?

The kayaking gets you to remote spots along the coast—small sea caves, rock formations and shipwrecks that are only reachable by water. Once you're there, you leave the kayak and snorkel to explore underwater, swimming through and around those same formations.

Do I need to be a strong swimmer?

You need at least a moderate level of physical fitness for both the paddling and the swimming. The guide assesses your ability when you contact them to book, and they'll suggest a route that matches your level.

What happens if the weather is bad on my booking day?

The guide chooses the location and sights based on local weather at the time. You'll confirm your start time and location with Fit in Crete before your activity, so they can pick the best spot for the conditions that day.

Are children allowed?

Children are welcome from age 2. Contact the operator when booking to discuss what's suitable for your child's age and swimming ability.

What's included in the price?

Snorkeling equipment, the sea kayak with safety gear (personal flotation device and other equipment), and an experienced local guide are all included. Bring your own swimsuit, towel, sun protection and any snacks or drinks you want.
