River crossings, a cave visit, and mountain village lunch on dirt tracks through inland Crete

A full-day off-road jeep safari from Hersonissos that takes you deep into Crete's countryside on almost entirely unpaved mountain tracks. You visit a cave with historical significance, stop for coffee in an authentic village square, cross a river gorge, and eat lunch in a small mountain settlement overlooking the north coast. Pickup and drop-off within 20 km of Hersonissos are included; the jeep holds 4–5 people, and you can arrange to drive it yourself if you meet the manual transmission and experience requirements.

The Experience

The day starts around 9 am when your guide meets the group at the departure point and assigns you to a jeep. Almost the entire route runs off-road—dirt tracks, mountain passes, and a river bed sheltered by bamboo—so you're seeing the inland Crete most visitors miss. The roads wind through grape yards and olive groves, past small villages where life moves at a different pace, and across terrain that demands a proper 4x4.

One of the main stops is a cave with spiritual significance, which requires good walking shoes. Later, the group pulls into a mountain village square next to the church, where you can use the facilities and grab a coffee at a traditional taverna. You'll cross the Aposelemis gorge on dirt tracks and pass the Aposelemis Dam, which sits above a submerged village—a striking sight. Lunch happens in a very small mountain settlement with a view that opens across the landscape; vegetarian options are available if you request them when booking. The drive down gives you a panoramic view of Crete's north coast before you head back to Hersonissos, arriving around 4 pm.

If you hold a manual driving license with at least three years of manual transmission experience, you can arrange to drive the jeep yourself instead of riding as a passenger—subject to insurance rules that exclude drivers from right-hand-drive countries. The guide is available in English, French, or Dutch depending on the option you choose. Gasoline, insurance, and local taxes are all included in the price.

Top questions

Can I drive the jeep myself on this safari?

Yes, if you meet the requirements: you must be at least 21 years old, hold a valid manual driving license with a minimum of three years of manual transmission experience, and not have driven only automatic cars in the past year. Drivers from countries where traffic drives on the right side of the road are not permitted by insurance to drive. The guide will confirm your eligibility at the start of the day.

What is the cave visit like and what do I need to bring?

The cave has historical and spiritual significance and is one of the tour highlights. You'll need comfortable walking shoes with good grip—flip-flops are not suitable. The visit is included in the tour price and the guide will lead you through it.

How rough are the roads, and is this suitable for someone who hasn't done off-roading before?

Almost all the driving happens on unpaved mountain tracks and dirt roads, including a river gorge crossing. The tour is suitable for all physical fitness levels, though it is not recommended for travelers with spinal injuries or pregnant travelers. Wear comfortable shoes and be prepared for a bumpy, dusty day in the countryside.

What's included in the lunch, and are there options for dietary preferences?

Lunch is a local meal served in a small mountain village with a view of the north coast. Vegetarian options are available—just let the operator know when you book. Extra drinks at lunch can be added to certain options at checkout.

How far is the pickup from where I'm staying?

Pickup and drop-off are included for hotels and accommodations within 20 km of Hersonissos. The guide will confirm the exact pickup time and location when you book.

What language will the guide speak?

You choose the guide language when you book: English, French, or Dutch. The same guide leads the group for the entire day.
