Athens Riviera tour: Temple of Poseidon, swimming, lake
A full day on the Aegean: ancient temple, secluded beach, and a natural lake spa
This full-day small-group tour along the Athens Riviera takes up to eight travelers to three stops: the Temple of Poseidon at Cape Sounion, Kape Beach for swimming in turquoise water, and Lake Vouliagmeni, a protected wetland with natural thermal springs. Round-trip transport from central Athens, an English-speaking guide, beach equipment, snacks and refreshments are included; the pace is built around generous free time at each location rather than rushing between them.
Step-by-step itinerary
Athens Riviera tour and relaxation
- Travel along Athens Riviera
- Visit Temple of Poseidon
- Swim and relax at Kape Beach
- Enjoy free time at Lake Vouliagmeni
The Experience
The day starts with a coastal drive south from downtown Athens, crossing the Athenian Riviera toward Cape Sounion. The Temple of Poseidon sits on a cliff overlooking the Aegean, built in the 5th century BCE during Athens' Golden Age and dedicated to the god of the sea. Its Doric columns and position at the point where ancient sailors would bid farewell to land make it one of Greece's most recognizable ancient sites — you'll have time to walk the temple grounds and take in the view without being herded through.
After the temple, the tour moves to Kape Beach, a rocky cove near Cape Sounion with clear turquoise water and a quieter atmosphere than the city beaches. The steep path down keeps crowds away, and you get substantial free time to swim, snorkel or simply sit on the rocks. Beach equipment — towels, snorkels, fins — comes with the tour, so you don't need to pack or rent separately.
The final stop is Lake Vouliagmeni, a protected wetland and nature monument on the Athenian Riviera. The lake's thermal springs keep the water warm year-round, and the site includes a natural fish spa where small fish nibble dead skin. You'll have time to swim, wade or walk the perimeter depending on what appeals to you. Bottled water, coffee, tea and snacks are available throughout the day, and the air-conditioned vehicle means the drive back to Athens is a chance to rest rather than another task to manage.

What is the Temple of Poseidon, and why is it located at Cape Sounion?
The Temple of Poseidon is a 5th-century BCE sanctuary built on a cliff overlooking the Aegean Sea as a symbol of Athens' naval power. Its position at Cape Sounion was strategic: ancient sailors would see it as they left for sea or caught their first glimpse of home returning to port.
Can I swim at both Kape Beach and Lake Vouliagmeni, or do I have to choose one?
You get free time at both locations on the same day. Kape Beach offers open-water swimming in the sea with snorkeling gear provided; Lake Vouliagmeni is a thermal lake where you can swim and experience the natural fish spa if you want to.
What's included in the tour, and what do I need to bring?
The tour includes round-trip transport from central Athens, an English-speaking guide, beach equipment (towels, snorkels, fins), bottled water, coffee, tea and snacks. You'll want to bring sunscreen, a change of clothes, and any personal medications; meals beyond snacks are not provided.
How long is the drive from Athens, and what time does the tour start?
The full tour runs eight hours from start to finish, including the coastal drive south to Cape Sounion and back to central Athens. Specific pickup times depend on your hotel location; the operator will confirm the schedule when you book.
Is Lake Vouliagmeni the same as the fish spa I've heard about?
Lake Vouliagmeni is a protected thermal lake on the Athenian Riviera, and it does include a natural fish spa where small fish nibble dead skin — but that's one feature of the lake, not the whole experience. You can swim, wade, walk the grounds, or skip the fish spa entirely.
What happens if I'm not a strong swimmer?
The tour is suitable for all fitness levels. At Kape Beach, you can wade, snorkel in shallow water, or stay on the rocks. Lake Vouliagmeni is calm and shallow in many areas. The guide and crew are there to help, and you're never required to swim if you'd rather relax on shore.
