The experience

You start with pickup from your hotel and head straight to the Acropolis, where the Parthenon and the Temple of Athena Nike sit on the hilltop overlooking the city. From there you move through the Acropolis Museum to see the sculptures and artifacts that came from the monuments above. The route then takes you to the Panathenaic Stadium, the ancient venue where the Olympic Games took place, and past the Parliament Building where the Evzones Guards stand in their ceremonial uniforms.

The tour covers the neoclassic buildings of modern Athens (the Academy, the University and the National Library), which sit alongside Byzantine churches and structures that span from the 5th century B.C. to today. Your guide points out how the city's architecture traces the arc of Greek culture across those centuries. In the final stretch, you have free time to walk the cobblestone streets of Plaka, at the foot of the Acropolis, where traditional shops and neoclassic houses line the way.

An air-conditioned vehicle carries you between stops, and bottled water is provided throughout. The guide speaks English and stays with the group for the full seven to eight hours. If you want to enter the Acropolis, the museum or other sites, you can add those fees when you book.

Is this one for you?The tour runs seven to eight hours with walking between stops and through neighborhoods, so it works best if you have a full day free and are comfortable on your feet for stretches. The private vehicle and guide mean you move at a set pace rather than lingering at any one site, which keeps all five major stops reachable in a single afternoon.
