The Experience

How do you see five major ancient sites without spending the whole day walking uphill? You ride a Segway through the neighborhoods where they stand. The tour departs from the office near the Acropolis Museum, where you get fitted with a helmet and briefed on the Segway before heading out. From there you glide up and down Athens' most beautiful hills—Pnika Hill for the best Acropolis and Parthenon views, then the Areopagus (Mars Hill), where Apostle Paul once addressed the Athenians, then down to the Odeon of Herodes Atticus, the ancient theater that still hosts the Athens Festival every summer.

The route takes you past the Stoa of Attalos at the Ancient Agora, where you stop for photos with one of the city's most recognizable columned structures behind you, then to the Kerameikos archaeological site—the area where ancient Athenian potters once worked. You also pass the Roman Forum and its gate. The whole loop covers more ground than you'd manage on foot in the same two hours, and the Segway handles the elevation changes that would otherwise wear you down. A live guide in English, Spanish, French, German or one of three other languages leads the group and stops at each site to explain what you're looking at.

You need to be at least 12 years old and weigh between 100 and 250 pounds to ride; anyone under 18 must be with an adult. Wear comfortable shoes and don't carry large bags. The tour suits all fitness levels because the Segway does the work—you're balancing and steering, not climbing. Water and bathroom access are available at the office before and after the ride.
