The Experience
The tour starts at the Okomfo Anokye Sword site, where a legendary fetish priest planted a sword in 1695 to symbolize Asante unity: no one has been able to uproot it since, not even Muhammad Ali. From there you move to Manhyia Palace Museum, built by the British as compensation when the Asante king returned from exile in Seychelles, though the Asantes later bought it outright and made it their own palace. The museum holds the traditional kitchen and bath setups of the Asante king, showing how the royal household actually lived.
Prempeh II Jubilee Museum keeps the everyday objects Asantes used in earlier centuries, giving a fuller picture of the kingdom beyond the palace itself. Then comes Kejetia Market, the biggest open market in West Africa, with eleven thousand stalls where forty-four thousand people shop daily. The market is run mostly by women, and you can find nearly anything sold there: the guide shows you how to move through it and what to look for.
Your guide is a live English speaker who knows Kumasi and its history. The company owner is a policeman focused on keeping travelers safe. Hotel pickup is included, and lunch happens during the tour. All areas are wheelchair accessible, and the pace suits all fitness levels.

What happens if it rains?
It may be canceled due to bad weather. If that happens, you're offered another date or a refund. Free cancellation up to 24h before the start.
What is the Okomfo Anokye Sword and why is it important to Kumasi?
The Okomfo Anokye Sword was planted in 1695 by a legendary Asante fetish priest to symbolize unity among the Asante people, not as a challenge to anyone else. Since then, no one has been able to pull it from the ground, including the heavyweight boxer Muhammad Ali. It marks the exact location where the Asante kingdom began.
Can I walk through Kejetia Market on this tour, or do we just drive past it?
You walk through Kejetia Market itself. The guide shows you how to navigate the eleven thousand stalls and explains what you're seeing. The market operates mostly by women vendors and moves forty-four thousand shoppers daily, so the guide helps you understand how it works.
What will I see inside Manhyia Palace Museum?
Manhyia Palace Museum displays the traditional kitchen and bath setups of the Asante king, along with everyday objects from the royal household. The building itself was constructed by the British as compensation when the Asante king returned from exile in Seychelles, though the Asantes bought it and converted it to their palace.
