The experience

The tour starts with hotel pickup and a drive through Makola Market, where you pass the stalls of women traders in Accra's busiest outdoor shopping district. The colorful chaos of the market (vendors, shoppers, the noise and movement) gives you a sense of the city's commercial pulse before you move on to the main site. From there, the route takes you to Agbogbloshie, Ghana's largest center for electronic waste recycling and disposal.

At Agbogbloshie, you walk through the scrap metal site itself and see how young people in the community dismantle, sort and recycle e-waste into usable products. The guide walks you through the process and answers questions about where discarded electronics end up, how they're handled, and why responsible waste management matters. This is not a passive viewing: you're on the ground in the community, watching the work happen, and understanding the scale of electronic waste that flows into Africa and how it gets processed.

The tour runs two to three hours total and includes an air-conditioned vehicle for the driving portions, bottled water, snacks and WiFi on board. A knowledgeable English-speaking guide is with you throughout, and the pace mixes driving with walking, so you're not stationary the whole time. Infants can ride in a stroller, and the site is suitable for all fitness levels, though the walking sections are on uneven ground typical of a working scrap yard.
