Step-by-step itinerary

Wurzburg city walking tour highlights

  • Meet at Congress Centrum or hotel
  • Walk to market square and see Falkenhaus
  • Visit Marienkapelle and view sculptures
  • See Town Hall and Vierröhrenbrunnen fountain
  • Cross old bridge over Main River
  • Optional walk or transport to Marienberg Fortress
  • Return crossing bridge towards Residence palace

The experience

You start at your hotel or Congress Centrum (no need to navigate to a distant meeting point), and walk toward the Marketplace to see the Falkenhaus, an 18th-century inn with a rococo facade, and the Marienkapelle with its Gothic architecture and sculptures by Tilman Riemenschneider. From there it's a short walk to the Town Hall and the Vierröhrenbrunnen, a large Baroque fountain, then across the old bridge over the Main River: a natural photo stop. The guide explains the city's role in the wine region and the work of Balthasar Neumann, the Baroque architect who defined Würzburg's look.

The Marienberg Fortress is optional on this tour. If you choose it, it's about a 20-minute walk up from the bridge, and from the top you see the Main River valley and the city spread below. On the way down, you head toward the Residence, a grand Baroque palace. Underneath it sits the Staatlicher Hofkeller, the old royal court wine cellar, where the region's wines are still sold. A trade Würzburg has been known for since the Middle Ages.

Your guide is with your group only, so questions and pace adjustments happen on the spot. The walk is easy, suitable for any age and fitness level, and no transportation is needed beyond your own feet.

Top questions

What languages is the guide in?

Live guide in English and German.

Can the guide meet me at my hotel instead of Congress Centrum?

Yes, if your hotel is in the city center, the guide will meet you there at no extra charge. Otherwise the meeting point is Congress Centrum at Turmgasse 11.

Is the Marienberg Fortress included in the tour?

The Marienberg Fortress is optional. Your guide will explain the choice on the spot. It's about a 20-minute walk up from the Main River bridge, and you can decide whether to go based on your energy and time.

What is the Vierröhrenbrunnen?

The Vierröhrenbrunnen is a large Baroque fountain in the city center near the Town Hall. It's one of the prominent landmarks you'll see and a good photo opportunity during the walk.

Who was Tilman Riemenschneider?

Tilman Riemenschneider was a famous German sculptor whose work you'll see in the Marienkapelle, the Gothic chapel on the Marketplace. His statues are among the chapel's most striking features.

How long does the walk take if I include the Marienberg Fortress?

The tour itself is two hours. If you add the optional Marienberg Fortress, the 20-minute walk up and time at the top will extend the day, but your guide can adjust the pace and other stops to fit your schedule.
