Step-by-step itinerary

Wine hike and tasting on German Wine Route

  • Start at the German Wine Gate
  • Learn about phylloxera impact
  • View Southern Palatinate wine landscape
  • Hear stories of German viticulture pioneers
  • Explore history at the Sesel vine shear

The experience

The hike starts at the German Wine Gate (the official beginning of the German Wine Route itself), where your guide explains what the Weintor means to Palatinate wine history. From there, the trail moves through five stations, each one built around a different layer of the region: the phylloxera crisis that nearly destroyed European viticulture in the 19th century; the landscape and climate that make Pfalz wines distinctive; the pioneering winemakers (Cuntz, Scheu, Herold, von Bassermann-Jordan), who reshaped German viticulture; and the ancient history of the vine shear, the Sesel, which takes you back to Roman and Greek origins of the craft.

At the Little Wine Gate, the view opens across the Southern Palatinate vineyards toward the Black Forest beyond the Rhine plain. This is where the geography of the region becomes visible. The four wine tastings happen at stations along the way, each one paired with a winemaker from Schweigen-Rechtenbach itself, so you taste the wines where they are made. Thorsten Eiselstein, a recognized consultant for German Wine (DWI), guides the conversation and connects each wine to the stories of the place. You keep the sample glass as a souvenir.

The pace is relaxed, two hours total, and the route is wheelchair accessible, with all surfaces and areas passable. Public transportation options are nearby if you need them. Alcohol-free alternatives are available if you ask ahead.

What’s included

  • Four wine tastings from local Schweigen-Rechtenbach winemakers.
  • a souvenir wine glass to keep after the tour.
  • alcohol-free alternatives available upon request.
