The experience
Wobbling a little at first, I gripped the handlebars and tried to look like I’d ridden a city bike before. Our guide, Anna, smiled (she probably sees this every day) and handed me a helmet with a sticker that said “Heidelberg loves you.” We started near the Neckarwiese park. There was this faint smell of grass mixed with coffee from somewhere nearby. It was quieter than I expected for such a famous city.
We pedaled along the riverbank, passing students stretched out on the grass and an old man feeding ducks. Anna pointed out neighborhoods as we went: her voice carried over the hum of our wheels. At one point, she stopped so we could watch rowers glide past under Karl-Theodor-Bridge. Crossing that bridge into Heidelberg Old Town felt like slipping into another time. Cobblestones rattled under our tires and church bells echoed off pastel buildings. I tried saying “Altstadt” properly but got it wrong: Anna laughed and corrected me gently.
