The experience

Your group cycles alone: no other tourists, no fixed speed. The route begins in Leipzig's city center and moves through Clara Zetkin Park toward the Elster floodbed, then follows a cycle path to Lake Cospuden. As you circle the lake, you pass the diocese height and Zöbigker Hafen, then continue through Kees' Park and the Southern Shire Forest before looping back through Clara Zetkin Park to end where you started. The guide handles the navigation and shares what the landscape is, but your group decides when to stop, how long to linger, and whether to adjust the route.

What makes this landscape unusual is its recent history. Thirty-five years ago, lignite mining covered this area. Today it has become a dense network of paths threading through lakes, meadows, and forest: one of Europe's largest renaturation projects. The Elster's wild floodplain forest and the clear water of Lake Cospuden are the centerpieces, but the whole route shows how quickly nature reclaims industrial land when given the space.

Rental bikes are new 28-inch city bikes with low entry frames, suitable for all fitness levels. You choose your guide's language (English or German) when you book. Helmets and accessories can be rented on site if you need them. The tour takes four hours and works for groups of friends, families, or company outings. Children must be at least 14 years old.
