The experience
The minivan picks you up at your hotel or address in Garmisch-Partenkirchen and heads toward the castles with your guide Stefan, who has spent two decades leading tours through Bavaria. On the way, you'll stop at a baroque church (either the Wieskirche or a quieter alternative), where your guide explains the architecture and history. The route depends on which second castle you want to visit: if you're heading to Linderhof, you'll drive along the Plansee mountain lake instead, and see a different baroque church on that route.
Neuschwanstein Castle itself is the centerpiece. You'll walk uphill from the car park (about 1.5 km in an hour, though horse carriage and shuttle options exist if you need them), then join a 35-minute guided tour of King Ludwig II's completed living quarters: the throne room, bedrooms and halls. Afterward, a 15-minute walk takes you through an unfinished floor, the castle's surprisingly modern kitchen and the planned bathroom. The castle has 346 stairs in total, and if mobility is a concern, an elevator service can be arranged in advance with a medical certificate. Skip-the-line admission is guaranteed even at short notice, a real advantage given the castle's popularity and reduced visitor caps.
After Neuschwanstein, you choose your second castle. Hohenschwangau, King Maximilian II's neo-gothic summer residence, sits nearby and includes a 45-minute guided tour. A carriage service runs almost door-to-door in warmer months. Linderhof Palace, Ludwig's smallest and most intimate castle, lies in an Alpine valley on a scenic route past the Plansee. It's the only one of his three fairytale castles he actually completed. If you pick Linderhof, you'll also pass through Oberammergau, where you can walk around the village, see the famous wall paintings, and visit the Passion Play theatre. A chairlift and alpine coaster operate there too if you want to add that on. The day ends with a drive back to Garmisch-Partenkirchen.

Top questions
What languages is the guide in?
Live guide in English and German.
Can I visit both Hohenschwangau and Linderhof on the same day?
No. You can tour Neuschwanstein Castle and one other castle (either Hohenschwangau or Linderhof) in a single day. The guide will help you decide based on your interests and the route that works best for your group.
What happens if I can't walk the uphill path to Neuschwanstein Castle?
A horse carriage and shuttle bus (not operating in snow and ice) run partway up. You'll still walk roughly 500 meters uphill or 800 meters downhill to the castle entrance. If you have a medical certificate of mobility restriction, an exclusive elevator service inside the castle can be arranged in advance at no extra cost, though availability is limited.
Is the skip-the-line admission really guaranteed?
Yes. The tour includes a guaranteed skip-the-line surcharge for Neuschwanstein, which means you bypass the ticket queue even if you book at short notice. The castle limits visitors to small groups, so this access is a real advantage during peak season.
What's included in the price?
Neuschwanstein Castle entry with skip-the-line surcharge, the 35-minute guided castle tour, hotel pickup in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, the minivan ride, stops at baroque churches and villages, and your guide's commentary throughout the day. Mineral water is provided. Entrance fees for the second castle (Hohenschwangau at €26 or Linderhof at €10) and any optional add-ons like the Venus Grotto or alpine coaster are separate.
How long is the tour?
The full day runs about 9.5 hours from pickup to return, including all castle tours, stops and driving time.
