The experience
You leave Munich heading south past the Theresienwiese, the Oktoberfest grounds, and drive toward the foothills. The castle appears as you approach: Neuschwanstein, the 19th-century palace King Ludwig II built in a medieval style but outfitted with cutting-edge technology for its time. Your guide leads a 35-minute tour through the interior rooms, then you walk another 15 minutes through additional spaces at your own pace, informed by what your guide has already explained. The castle sits on a slope, so you can walk uphill from the car park (about 1.5 km in an hour), take a shuttle bus, or ride a horse-drawn carriage if you prefer not to walk. The castle itself has 346 stairs across its levels, though an elevator service is available with advance notice and appropriate documentation.
After the castle, you drive a few minutes to Ehrenberg, where the Highline 179 suspension bridge spans the valley at a dizzying height. The bridge is 406 meters long and stretches 114 meters above the ground: officially the world's longest pedestrian suspension bridge in the Tibet style. It is completely safe for children and adults, secured with eight rock anchors and fitted with high safety railings and netting. If heights aren't for you, the bridge can be viewed from numerous vantage points around the Ehrenberg castle ruins (which are free to enter) without ever stepping onto it. A lift replaces the 20-minute uphill walk if you prefer. If you do cross, a 10-minute walk on the other side leads to a viewpoint and the baroque Fort Claudia.
The tour is yours to shape. Your guide welcomes suggestions to linger longer at any stop or add a new one, and will adapt the route to fit your wishes. You travel in a new, air-conditioned Mercedes or VW minivan with only your group inside: no other tourists sharing the vehicle. The guide is licensed, friendly and knowledgeable in English or German. Optional upgrades let you visit Linderhof Palace, King Ludwig's smallest and most intimate castle in a baroque Alpine setting, or ride the Alpine Coaster, a 2,600-meter toboggan run with magnetic brakes that runs from Easter through October.
Is this one for you?Book the 9.5-hour option if you want the core experience (Neuschwanstein and Highline 179) without extra stops. Choose the XXL-Time Credit option if you have time for Linderhof Palace, the Alpine Coaster, or both. The guide will adapt the route to fit what matters most to you.
