The Experience
The day started with Markus pulling up in this spotless van right outside our hotel in Munich — honestly, I was still half-asleep but he handed us bottled water and grinned like he’d been up for hours. We set off through the Bavarian countryside, which looked like something out of an old storybook (but with more cows). Markus told us about King Ludwig II — “the dreamer king,” he called him — and pointed out little villages tucked between green hills. I kept cracking my window for fresh air; it smelled like wet grass and chimney smoke, even though it wasn’t that cold.
When we got to Neuschwanstein Castle, Markus had our tickets ready (no lines, thank god). He led us to Marienbrücke first — that bridge everyone takes photos from — and wow, the view really does look fake. There were other groups around but somehow it felt quiet up there; maybe it was just the fog rolling over the cliffs. Inside the castle, the tour guide explained all these wild details about Ludwig’s obsessions. Gold everywhere, swans everywhere — I think I lost count at 20 swans? My legs were burning after all those stairs but I barely noticed until we got outside again.
Lunch was in Schwangau at this place where nobody seemed to mind my terrible German (“Käsespätzle” is harder to say than you’d think). Markus ordered for us and laughed when my friend tried to say “danke” with a Texas accent. After that we drove a different way back toward Munich, past Lake Plansee — the water was so clear it looked unreal. We stopped at Linderhof Palace too; smaller than Neuschwanstein but somehow even more ornate inside. The gardens were full of autumn leaves and there was this smell of damp earth mixed with woodsmoke drifting from somewhere nearby.
I didn’t expect to care much about Oberammergau but seeing those painted houses and woodcarvings made me weirdly nostalgic for places I’ve never lived. Markus told us about the Passion Play (he’s seen it twice) and pointed out his favorite Christmas shop. The whole drive back I kept thinking about how strange it is that people built these castles just because they could imagine them. Anyway, if you’re thinking about a Neuschwanstein & Linderhof Castle tour from Munich — yeah, do it. I still think about that view from Marienbrücke sometimes.
