The experience

“You have to twist it like this,” our guide Markus said, holding up a knot of dough with flour still on his hands. I tried to copy him: my pretzel looked more like a sleepy snake than anything you’d find at the Viktualienmarkt, but nobody seemed to mind. The smell of yeast and coffee drifted around us, mixing with the chatter of early market vendors setting up their stalls. It was barely 9am and somehow already felt like we’d been welcomed into someone’s morning routine.

I didn’t expect breakfast in Munich to be so… ritualistic? There was this soft white sausage, Weisswurst, that you’re supposed to eat before noon (Markus insisted), dipped in sweet mustard and paired with wheat beer. “It’s tradition,” he grinned, pouring just enough for us to taste. I’m not usually a beer-for-breakfast person, but it made sense here, surrounded by locals reading newspapers or just quietly nodding hello as they passed our table.
