The experience

Download the Citywalksz app, load the audio files and map onto your phone or tablet, and you're ready to start. The tour takes you through Hauptbahnhof Leipzig (one of Europe's largest railway stations, built in 1915 and now housing over 140 shops and restaurants), then moves into the city proper. You'll pass Augustusplatz, the sprawling public square anchored by the Opera House and the Gewandhaus concert hall, home to the world-famous Gewandhaus Orchestra. The audio narration explains what you're looking at as you walk, so you move at whatever speed feels right: stop for twenty minutes at St. Thomas Church to read about Bach's time as cantor there, or keep moving if you're short on time.

The route also covers the GRASSI Museum complex, an Art Deco building housing three museums (Applied Arts, Ethnology, Musical Instruments), Moritzbastei (a 16th-century bastion turned cultural venue with bars and live music), and the Museum of Fine Arts, which holds work from the Middle Ages through contemporary pieces. You'll walk through historic passageways and market squares, and the map keeps you oriented. Since there are no admission fees included, you can choose which museums to enter and which to view from outside. The audio tells you what's worth knowing about each one.

You need your own smartphone or tablet to download the files, and your own headphones. The tour is English-language only. Depending on how many stops you make and how long you linger, the whole thing takes somewhere between two and five hours. Public transportation is nearby if your feet need a break, and the city center is compact enough that most of the walking is manageable.

Top questions

What landmarks does the audio tour actually cover?

St. Thomas Church, where Bach worked as cantor; the Old Town Hall; the Leipzig Opera House; Augustusplatz with the Gewandhaus concert hall; the GRASSI Museum complex; Moritzbastei; the New Town Hall; Hauptbahnhof Leipzig; and the Museum of Fine Arts. The audio explains the history and significance of each as you arrive.

Do I need to buy tickets to enter the museums and churches on the tour?

No admission fees are included with the audio tour. You can walk past the exteriors and listen to the audio descriptions, or pay separately if you want to go inside any of the museums or churches. The choice is yours as you go.

What do I need to download and how does it work?

Download the Citywalksz app, then download the mp3 audio files and the map that come with your ticket. Open the map on your phone, put on headphones, and start the audio file. The narration guides you through the city as you walk at your own pace.

Can I do this tour on a rainy day or does weather matter?

The tour is entirely outdoors, so heavy rain will make it uncomfortable. Light rain is manageable with an umbrella, but you'll want to check the forecast before you go. There are cafés and shops along the route if you need to take shelter.

How long should I plan for, and can I stop and come back to it later?

The tour takes between two and five hours depending on how many stops you make and how long you spend at each one. You can pause, grab lunch, visit a museum, and pick up where you left off: the map and audio files stay on your device, so you control the timing completely.
