The experience
You meet your guide at the CityClass Hotel Residence am Dom on Alter Markt, the historic market square where the tour begins. From there, the walk takes you through the traces of what was once a thriving center of Jewish learning in medieval Europe. You'll see the Stolpersteine (small brass plaques set into the pavement) that mark where Jewish residents lived before they were deported. The guide shows you the plan of the former Judengasse, the street that defined the Quarter, and explains how the Crusades and medieval pogroms shaped the community's history. You pass the Gothic City Hall with its carved images of Good Heroes, and reach Cologne Cathedral, built by the same architect who designed the Glockengasse Synagogue before it was destroyed. An engraved stone on the Cathedral preserves a letter of protection and privileges granted to the Jewish community in 1252.
If you choose the 4-hour, 5-hour or 6-hour option, the tour extends beyond the Old Town. The NS Documentation Centre occupies the EL-DE House, the former Gestapo headquarters and prison. You walk through the original offices and descend into the basement cells and torture rooms, where over 1,800 inscriptions carved by prisoners remain on the walls. The guide explains the systematic persecution of Jews and other groups under National Socialism. For the 5-hour and 6-hour options, you also visit the Roonstrasse Synagogue, the only place of Jewish worship that survived Kristallnacht in 1938, making it the most enduring witness to Cologne's turbulent Jewish history. The tour ends at Offenbach Square, named after the influential Jewish composer Jacques Offenbach.
The 6-hour option includes a round-trip private transfer between your accommodation and the meeting point, arranged in a standard sedan for groups of 1–4 people or a larger van for groups of 5 or more. This removes the need to navigate public transport after an intensive walking tour. The transfer time is estimated at 1 hour round-trip, though it can vary depending on distance and traffic. Wear comfortable shoes. The walking portion covers approximately 3.7 km and requires a reasonable level of fitness.

I'm visiting Cologne for the first time, what's the difference between the tour options?
The 2-hour tour covers the Jewish Quarter and Old Town highlights like the Cathedral and Stolpersteine. The 4-hour option adds the NS Documentation Centre and its prison cells. The 5-hour tour includes the Roonstrasse Synagogue as well. The 6-hour option bundles all three sites plus private transfer to and from your hotel, so you don't arrange transport yourself after the walk.
What exactly are the Stolpersteine I'll see on this tour?
Stolpersteine are small brass plaques set into the pavement throughout the Old Town. Each one marks the former home of a Jewish resident who was deported during the Holocaust, and displays their name and dates. They serve as a ground-level memorial to individual victims and are scattered across the Quarter.
How far is the walking portion, and do I need to be very fit?
The tour covers approximately 3.7 km on foot. The operator notes it requires good condition and comfortable shoes, and is suitable for all physical fitness levels. The 6-hour option with transfer is designed for those who want to avoid public transport after the walk.
Does the tour include entry to the Roonstrasse Synagogue and the NS Documentation Centre?
