The experience

The tour starts at the Eigelstein city gate near Cologne's central train station, where your guide fits you with a bike (either a standard city bike or an e-bike, depending on which you book), and a helmet. From there you head into the Eigelstein and Agnes neighborhoods and make your way north toward the Green Belt, Cologne's largest park. Your guide shares local knowledge about how the city developed over centuries as you ride at a relaxed, moderate pace.

The route crosses the Rhine on the Zoo Bridge, which opens onto the Rhine park and Boulevard. From the eastern bank you get a full view back across to the old city district, with the Cathedral visible in the distance. Then comes the Hohenzollern Bridge itself (one of Germany's most famous and busiest rail bridges), where you can see the thousands of padlocks couples have left as symbols of eternal love, and get a close view of the Cathedral from the bridgehead. A short ride past the modern Philharmonic Hall brings you to the Cathedral and the Old Town.

The Old Town is where the day slows down. You follow your guide through a medieval maze of narrow alleys, hidden squares and rustic breweries, hearing stories and anecdotes about the district. If time allows, you can stop for local food or a Kölsch beer. The tour finishes at the former industrial port, now redeveloped with striking modern architecture. The Crane Houses are worth getting your camera ready for. Rain poncho included if the weather turns.
