The experience
The day starts with a 40-minute drive south from Cologne to Königswinter, a village at the foot of Drachenfels mountain. Once there, you board the Drachenfelsbahn, Germany's oldest cog railway, which pulls you up the slope like a slow-motion roller coaster without the drop. At the summit sits a ruined medieval castle with views across the Rhine valley. On clear days you can see Cologne Cathedral from the top. Your guide walks you through the history of the mountain and the legends attached to it.
After the ruins, you descend to Drachenburg Castle, a 19th-century villa built to look like a fortress, now fully restored. Your licensed guide leads you through the rooms and gardens, explaining the castle's short but eventful history. The Drachenfelsbahn carries you back down to the village. If the railway is out of service, your driver will take you as close as possible, though you may need to walk uphill for 10 to 14 minutes on foot.
On the 6-hour option, you then travel to Linz am Rhein, known as the "colorful city" for its painted half-timbered houses. Your guide leads a roughly 2-hour walk through the cobblestoned Old Town, pointing out the Old Market Square, St. Martin Church, Linz Castle, and the Pulverturm, a remnant of the medieval city fortifications. After that, your driver takes you back to your hotel in Cologne.
