The experience

You start in Baden-Baden, where the Casino (described by Marlene Dietrich as the most beautiful in the world) anchors the morning. The Lichtentaler Allee, lined with rose gardens and overlooking the medieval ruins of Ebersteinburg and Hohenbaden castles, sets the tone for what follows. Then the Black Forest High Road takes over: Germany's oldest scenic route, over 85 years old, winds through 60 kilometers of forest and mountain. Your driver-guide is flexible with timing and detours, so if a village or a viewpoint catches your eye, the schedule bends to it.

Lake Mummelsee sits at the heart of the day. At 1,036 meters above sea level and over 10,000 years old, it is the largest of the seven remaining glacial lakes in the Black Forest: 3.7 hectares across, 18 meters deep, ringed by a walking path of about 800 meters. This is where you stop to walk, eat local cuisine (Black Forest cake is the tradition), or simply sit. The route then descends toward Strasbourg, crossing into France and arriving at the Cathedral, a Gothic structure that has stood for over a thousand years and sits at the meeting point of two cultures and two languages.

The vehicle is a new, air-conditioned Mercedes-Benz V Class with WiFi. Child seats are available if you need them. Your guide speaks your language and knows the region well enough to suggest restaurants, arrange wine tastings in local cellars, or pivot the day toward whatever interests you most, whether that is the waterfalls, the Roman history buried beneath Baden-Baden's marketplace, or simply more time at one stop and less at another.

Is this one for you?Seven to eight hours leaves room for a leisurely pace at Lake Mummelsee and time to walk around Strasbourg Cathedral, but rules out a full exploration of the city itself. This is a day trip, not an overnight. If you want to linger in Strasbourg or add a wine tasting in a Black Forest cellar, your guide can adjust the stops to fit.
