The experience
You start in Baden-Baden itself, where the driver-guide shows you the Casino (the one Marlene Dietrich called the most beautiful in the world), the collegiate church that towers above the market square, and the famous Lichtentaler Allee with its rose gardens. The route then moves into the surrounding foothills, passing the romantic 11th-century castle ruins at Hohenbaden (the upper tower gives a view across Baden-Baden, the Rhine plain and into France), and the medieval Ebersteinburg castle nearby.
The drive takes you onto the Black Forest High Road, Germany's oldest scenic route, which runs over 60 kilometers through the northern forest. A stop at Mummelsee, the largest of the Black Forest's remaining glacial lakes, sits at 1,036 meters elevation and gives you room to walk, rest or eat at local restaurants. On the way back, you pass Geroldsauer Wasserfall, a waterfall at the foot of the canyon forest, and Kloster Lichtental, a 12th-century monastery where the nuns founded the region's first winery.
The guide carries WiFi in the car, provides mineral water, and arranges child seats if you request them before the trip. If you want a meal or wine tasting, contact the operator in advance and they'll reserve a table at a castle restaurant or a local vineyard.
