The experience
You're picked up from your hotel and driven through Berlin in your own private minivan, which means no waiting for other passengers and no fixed stops if something catches your eye. Your guide narrates the route in your chosen language (English, Spanish or German), while you sit back in heated or air-conditioned comfort regardless of the weather. The car does the work of moving you between sites, so you cover more ground than you would on foot.
The tour hits Berlin's major landmarks in sequence: the Reichstag, a 1895 building rebuilt by Norman Foster that now houses German Parliament; the Brandenburg Gate, the city's most recognizable monument; and the Berlin Wall, where you see one of the few remaining sections. Checkpoint Charlie, once the crossing point for Allied soldiers between East and West Berlin, sits near the Topography of Terror, a documentation center built on the site of former Gestapo and SS headquarters. Potsdamer Platz, which was no man's land for decades next to the wall, has become one of Berlin's busiest intersections again. You pass through Gendarmenmarkt, described as the city's most beautiful square, with its twin domes and Schinkel's Concert Hall, and drive along Unter den Linden, the boulevard running from the Brandenburg Gate to the rebuilt Humboldt Forum museum.
Museum Island rounds out the route: a UNESCO World Heritage Site that includes the Neues Museum, home to the Nefertiti bust, and the Pergamon Museum with the Ishtar Gate. The Berlin Cathedral, Germany's largest Protestant church with royal burials inside, and the Victory Column, which commemorates three Prussian wars and was relocated to Tiergarten by Albert Speer, are also on the standard route. If your group wants to focus on different sites (say, more Cold War history or more museums), you can customize the itinerary before you book.
