The experience
The day starts at the port: your hosts meet you as soon as the ship docks and walk you to a comfortable, air-conditioned bus shared with other cruise passengers. The 3-hour journey crosses the flatlands of East Germany to Berlin, where a private vehicle with a driver and professional tour guide are waiting. From that point forward, the itinerary is yours to shape. You decide which sites to visit, where to stop and how long to spend at each one.
The route typically covers Charlottenburg Palace, Berlin's largest royal residence, then moves to East Berlin for a photo stop at the Reichstag. You walk through the Brandenburg Gate and past the Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe, see the Tiergarten and Victory Column, then continue to Hitler's bunker site, Potsdamer Platz and one of the remaining Berlin Wall sections before reaching the Topography of Terror. Checkpoint Charlie (the most famous Cold War crossing between East and West) comes next, followed by the spectacular Gendarmenmarkt and Bebelplatz. Time permitting, you may also visit Museum Island, the Berlin Cathedral, Unter den Linden boulevard and Alexanderplatz with its iconic TV Tower, or drive past the East Side Gallery's world-famous graffiti wall.
Lunch is on your own (not included), and the guide can point you toward options. At the end of your Berlin time, you board the shared bus for the return journey to the port, arriving with time to spare before departure. Guides speak English, Spanish, Portuguese, Italian and several other languages. Bring some EUR cash for meals, drinks and toilet stops, or ask your guide to arrange an ATM stop if you need it.
