The Experience

The boat departs and moves along the Spree through Berlin's historic center, starting at Museum Island where the Berlin Cathedral and Humboldt Forum sit on the water's edge. You pass the Nikolaiviertel, the oldest settlement in the city, rebuilt after World War II, and then enter the stretch where the Wall once stood. The Mühlendammschleuse lock—built in 1942 and marking where Berlin was founded—marks the transition into what was East Berlin during the Cold War.

The tour's centerpiece is the East Side Gallery: 1.3 kilometers of the longest surviving section of the Berlin Wall, painted by 118 artists from 21 countries in spring 1990. The paintings you see are replicas from 2009, but they still carry the political commentary artists made in those first weeks after the Wall fell. From the water, you see the side that once faced East Berlin. The Oberbaum Bridge appears next—a red-brick double tower that has stood since the 1890s—followed by the Molecule Men, a three-figure sculpture rising from the Spree at the point where three districts meet.

The boat then turns west into the government district, passing the Reichstag with its glass dome designed by Norman Foster, the Federal Chancellery, and the House of World Cultures in its modernist Congress Hall. The commentary—delivered live in both English and German—explains what you're seeing as it unfolds. An onboard bar lets you buy food and drinks if you want them, and there's a toilet on board.
