The Experience

The boat leaves from the dock with a glass of Prosecco in your hand and the Reichstag already lit up across the water. You've got your own private table on board — not a shared bench, not a standing-room spot — which means the whole evening moves at your pace. The menu arrives and you choose: ox cheeks braised in Merlot, salmon in buttered lime sauce, or falafel with ratatouille. Cold cucumber soup with crostini comes first, then Swabian potato salad with your protein, then the main, then nougat and marzipan lasagne with bourbon vanilla sauce for dessert. Soft drinks and beer are included, and the wine keeps flowing.

The ship passes Museum Island — five of Berlin's most famous museums reconstructed since reunification — and then the TV Tower at Alexanderplatz, built in 1969 to mark East Germany's twentieth birthday and still one of the ten highest towers in the world. You're eating and watching this happen at the same time, which sounds chaotic but somehow isn't. The light changes. Someone at the next table laughs. The water moves under you. After four courses and three hours, you're back at the dock and it's dark.

Vegetarian meals are available if you mention it when you book. Children can come — infants in a pram are fine — though there's a minimum drinking age of 18 for alcohol. The Prosecco swaps for mulled wine between mid-November and late December. Groups have to meet a minimum passenger count, so there's a small chance of cancellation up to four weeks before your date, but if that happens you get an alternative time or your money back.
