The experience

The Cessna T206H leaves Augsburg Airport and heads south toward Munich, passing over Dachau before circling the city at 600 meters. From there you see the Allianz Arena, the English Garden, Marienplatz and the Frauenkirche, Nymphenburg Castle, BMW World and the Olympic Park with its 291-meter tower. The pilot points out each landmark through the headset while the plane moves at a pace slow enough to take in the view.

After Munich, the route turns east toward the Bavarian lakes. You pass the Chiemsee with Herrenchiemsee Castle in the middle, then climb toward the mountains. For the next half hour the plane follows the northern Alps, crossing the Isar valley and passing over a chain of lakes (the Thiersee, Schliersee, Spitzingsee, Tegernsee, Walchensee and Kochelsee) each one framed by the Karwendel massif. The altitude rises to around 2,000 meters as you approach Garmisch, and Zugspitze comes into view at 2,962 meters. The plane briefly reaches 3,250 meters in this section. Below, the deep blue Eibsee sits in the valley.

The flight ends with Neuschwanstein Castle rising at the foot of the mountains above Lake Forggensee, then turns back north over the Five Lakes Region. You pass Lake Starnberg, the Andechs Monastery on the "Holy Mountain," Lake Ammersee, and the turquoise Wörthsee before returning to Augsburg. Every seat is a window seat. The copilot position is available as an upgrade if you want an even wider view.
