The tour begins at Büchel 29-31 in the old town, where you enter a six-digit game code you'll receive by text and booking-platform message. From there, the Aachener Dom rises first: Charlemagne's octagonal chapel, over 1,200 years old and Germany's first UNESCO World Heritage site. The riddles circle the emperor's throne and a legendary deal with the devil as you move through the building and its surroundings.
The route carries you next to the Elisenbrunnen, the classical colonnade where sulphur springs steam as they did for the Romans, then to the Rathaus commanding the market square: built on the ruins of the imperial palace and hung with the crowns of thirty coronation feasts. Trivia challenges and photo tasks keep the momentum going. You walk at your own pace, take as many breaks as you need, and the whole circuit takes around two hours. Groups compete against each other and against the city's high score on the leaderboard, so there's a finish line even though there's no guide waiting at one.
You'll need a fully charged smartphone with an active mobile data connection. Disable any VPN and avoid city Wi-Fi, as these will cause the app to disconnect. The tour is available in 24 languages.
