Step-by-step itinerary

Visit Uplistsikhe, Gori, and Georgia memorial

  • Explore Uplistsikhe cave town fortress
  • Tour Joseph Stalin’s Museum in Gori
  • Visit Chronicles of Georgia monument

The experience

If you have a free day in Tbilisi and want to move beyond the capital's central sights, this tour strings together three stops that span Georgia's deepest history and its twentieth-century rupture. Uplistsikhe, the Fortress of the Lord, sits on a rocky massif above the Mtkvari river and held religious, political and cultural weight through the Hellenistic and late Antique periods. You walk the ancient streets yourself, passing rock-carved theatres, royal halls, a pharmacy, pagan temples and Christian churches. The remains of granaries and clay wine vessels hint at how people lived there over two thousand years ago.

The second stop is Stalin's Museum in Gori, his birthplace. The museum occupies his childhood home, a small hut, and displays his armour-plated railway carriage, office furniture, personal belongings and gifts accumulated over his years as secretary general of the Communist Party. Photographs, documents, paintings and newspaper articles fill the rooms. A statue that once stood in Gori's main square until 2010 is also part of the collection. It is a dense record of one man's grip on twentieth-century power.

The tour ends at the Chronicles of Georgia, the "History of Georgia" monument created by sculptor Zurab Tsereteli. Few visitors make it here, though the scale and symbolic weight justify the detour. The ensemble of monumental sculptures took twenty years to create and remains unfinished: Tsereteli's tools still stand waiting for elements yet to be added. The site sits in Tbilisi itself, so you return to the capital by the end of the day. A professional guide travels with the group and provides live commentary in English or Russian on board.
