The Experience

I didn’t really know what to expect crossing from Tbilisi into northern Armenia—maybe just old churches and some hills, I guess? But the border felt like a real shift. Our guide, Arman, had this gentle way of pointing out things I’d have missed: the faded Soviet murals on roadside buildings, the way the air smelled sharper in the hills. We stopped first at Akhtala Monastery. It was quiet except for a couple of old women lighting candles inside. The frescoes looked almost blue in the morning light—hard to describe, but I kept staring at them. Arman told us about the legend behind the broken altar wall; he shrugged and said no one really knows if it’s true. That made me smile.

Sanahin Monastery sits higher up—getting there was a bit bumpy, but worth it for that view over Debed Gorge (I still think about that). There was this cold wind that made my eyes water as we walked through stone arches covered in moss. Arman explained khachkars—those carved cross-stones unique to Armenia—and pointed out Amenaprkich, which apparently means “All Savior.” I tried repeating it and probably butchered it; he laughed and said my accent sounded Georgian. Not sure if that’s good or bad.

Lunch was honestly my favorite part of this day trip to northern Armenia. We sat around a kitchen table with a local family—potatoes with herbs, salty cheese, bread still warm from the oven. The grandmother poured us something like homemade vodka (I took one sip and coughed; she winked at me). Their cat kept weaving between our legs under the table. Afterward we drove past the Mikoyan brothers museum—a MIG fighter jet parked right outside, looking weirdly at home among all those Soviet statues. We just stood there for a minute watching kids play nearby before heading back toward Tbilisi.
