summary

Private mountain road journey to Gergeti and Ananuri with local flavors

You’ll ride out from Tbilisi into Georgia’s highlands with a local guide, stopping for legends at blue lakes, climbing Ananuri fortress walls, tasting khinkali in Pasanauri, and standing in silence at Gergeti Monastery above Kazbegi. Expect fresh mountain air, real stories—and maybe muddy shoes—but definitely memories that linger after you’re home.

itinerary

Step-by-step itinerary

Day 1 — Scenic tour from Tbilisi to Kazbegi

  • Drive along Georgian Military Highway
  • Stop at blue lake and learn legend
  • Explore Ananuri medieval castle
  • Enjoy panorama at Gudauri viewpoint
  • Visit Pasanauri town and rivers
  • Discover Gergeti monastery hilltop
  • Stop at mosaic arch for views
  • Arrive at Stepantsminda (Kazbegi)

I didn’t expect the air to feel so sharp when we left Tbilisi behind. The city faded fast, replaced by this wild sweep of green hills and that blue lake everyone talks about—our guide Nino just grinned when I asked if it was always that color. She told us an old legend about it (something with a heartbroken prince, I think?) while the wind made my jacket flap like crazy. I could smell pine and something sweet—maybe wildflowers or just the car’s heater working overtime.

We stopped at Ananuri fortress, which looks even older up close than in photos. The stones felt cold under my hand. Nino pointed out carvings on the church wall—she said one looked like a sun but honestly, I couldn’t really tell. Climbing the tower was worth it for that view over the river, though my legs were shaking a bit (heights aren’t my thing). There were two old ladies selling churchkhela by the gate; I bought one and chewed it slowly as we drove on.

The drive up to Gudauri was all switchbacks and sudden silences—sometimes you just look out and forget to talk. We stopped at that mosaic arch overlooking the gorge; it’s bigger than I thought, and there was this group of teenagers taking selfies in front of the mountains. Someone offered paragliding but honestly, no way for me. Lunch in Pasanauri was khinkali—Nino showed us how to eat them without making a mess (I failed). She laughed and said everyone does their first time.

Gergeti Monastery sits way up above Stepantsminda—getting there felt like climbing into a postcard, except your shoes get muddy and your breath fogs up in front of you. There was this moment where everything went quiet except for some crows circling overhead, and I kind of wanted to stay there longer. You know? On the drive back, I kept thinking about those mountains and how they make you feel very small but also sort of lucky to be here at all.
