The experience
How do you reach the parts of Georgia that few travelers ever see? By horseback, over five days, with a local guide who knows the land and the horses. You start in Tbilisi with a pickup from your accommodation, then transfer to Shiraki in the foothills of Vashlovani National Park. There you meet your riding team and the horses that will carry you through the next four days. The first afternoon takes you through open pastures and up Black Mountain, the highest point in the region, where the ridge opens onto sweeping views of the Alazani River, the Caucasus Mountains and the vast park beyond. After roughly 5 to 6 hours in the saddle, you arrive at your first campsite, help settle the horses and eat dinner surrounded by wilderness.
Each of the next three days follows the same rhythm: breakfast at camp, a full day of riding through a different landscape, then arrival at a new campsite by evening. Day two takes you along dramatic mountain ridges and down toward the Alazani River, where the terrain shifts into Vashlovani's distinctive sandstone cliffs and semi-desert valleys. Day three goes deeper into the park's remote interior (winding riverbeds, hidden valleys, towering cliffs) with time built in to stop, rest and photograph. Day four opens onto the vast plains and meadows that make Vashlovani extraordinary on horseback. If you're an experienced rider and conditions allow, you can canter and gallop across the open ground. For beginners, the pace stays comfortable. Throughout, your guides share their knowledge of the landscape and watch for wildlife: wild goats, horses and the bird species that live in the park.
On the final morning, you ride elevated ridgelines with panoramic views across the park's cliffs, valleys and plains, then return the horses to their pastures and say goodbye to your riding team. From there, a vehicle takes you back to Tbilisi and your accommodation, ending the five-day journey. You sleep in a fully supported camp each night. Coffee, tea and snacks are provided throughout, along with traditional meals at camp. Pickup from Tbilisi is included in the price.
