The experience
Vimy Ridge is the centerpiece. You descend into the Grange Tunnel where Canadian troops of the PPCL and Black Watch stood before the attack, then walk the preserved trenches (both Canadian and German positions), and visit the newly built Visitor Center. The Memorial itself sits on ridge 145, and the scale of it becomes clear only when you stand there.
The day moves across the Somme landscape to four other sites: the Courcelette Canadian Memorial, a granite stone marking where Canadian forces fought; the Lochnagar Crater, a massive hole blown by a mine explosion on July 1, 1916; the Thiepval Memorial with its own visitor center; and Beaumont-Hamel Newfoundland Memorial, where you stand at the exact trench line from which Newfoundland troops went over the top that same day. You walk along the Danger Tree and see the preserved battlefield as it was left.
Transport is by air-conditioned minivan, and lunch is included. The guide is live and speaks English, French or Dutch. Bottled water and a booklet recording the events are provided. A minimum of two people is required per booking, and the group stays at eight maximum.
