The experience

You leave your Lille hotel in the morning and spend the day moving through the battlefields where Australian troops fought in 1917. The tour opens at Pheasant Wood Military Cemetery in Fromelles, where 250 Australian soldiers were found and exhumed after decades in unmarked graves. You stand in the cemetery where they now rest. From there you move to VC Corner, France's only exclusively Australian WWI cemetery, then to Hill 60, where you see the memorial to the 1st Australian Tunneling Company and the Caterpillar Mine Crater. The guide walks you through the ground itself: standing on the German line looking toward No Man's Land, standing on the battlefield where the June 1917 attack was launched.

The afternoon takes you deeper into Passchendaele. You spend time in the Memorial Museum Passchendaele 1917, which the operator describes as the best WWI museum in the region, then move to Tyne Cot Cemetery, the Commonwealth War Graves Commission's largest cemetery, where you stand among thousands of headstones. You also visit Polygon Wood Memorial, where the 5th Australian Division is remembered and where the ANZAC Day Dawn Service is held each year. The tour ends in Ypres, where you have free time to walk the square and see the Cloth Hall and Cathedral before standing under the Menin Gate to attend the Last Post ceremony: a daily tribute that plays at the memorial every evening.

Your guide speaks English, French or Dutch and travels with you throughout the day in an air-conditioned minivan. Lunch and bottled water are provided. The full day runs 12 hours from pickup to return, though the tour itself is structured around nine hours of stops and movement. Alcoholic drinks are available to purchase during the day.
