The experience
The via cordata is a rock face equipped with ropes and anchors so you can move across it using climbing and abseiling techniques: a middle ground between hiking and rock climbing. You'll use rope systems to progress, which means no prior climbing knowledge is required, though you do need a moderate level of physical fitness and comfort with heights. The Philémon Crossing route sits on the crêtes between La Ciotat and Cassis, running through creeks that few people reach on foot alone.
The abseiling section drops more than 90 meters down the cliff face, and then you climb back up using the same rope techniques. Between the two, you'll walk sections of the route and take in views of the sea and the surrounding rock formations. The whole activity runs 4 hours. A live guide in English or French leads the group and manages the rope setup and safety systems throughout.
Climbing gear (harness, helmet, ropes) comes with the booking. Public transportation options run near the meeting point. The activity is not suitable for pregnant travelers or anyone with cardiovascular concerns, and participants should be comfortable on steep, exposed rock.
