The experience

You start with a detailed orienteering map, a compass and a safety briefing that covers map reading and navigation techniques. The guide explains the checkpoints scattered across the landscape and how the course works, then you and your group set off to find them. The route adapts to your level, so whether you're new to orienteering or experienced, the challenge fits. You're not following a path or a guide. You're reading terrain, choosing your own route between points, and deciding how to move through the landscape most efficiently.

The Calanques near La Ciotat shift from maquis scrubland to pine forest as you climb, with checkpoints hidden along trails, at scenic viewpoints, and among rocky outcrops. You'll observe your surroundings closely to spot landmarks on the map, navigate using natural features, and work together as a team to make decisions about which way to go. The activity ends back at the starting point with a friendly debriefing where you can talk through the routes you chose and what you found.

The half-day format means three hours of active navigation without the commitment of a full day. Morning and afternoon slots both run three hours, and times can be shifted to fit your schedule. A live guide speaks English or French, so language is not a barrier. Photos are included, so you'll have a record of the landscape you moved through.

Is this one for you? This is a self-guided navigation activity, not a walking tour where a guide points things out. You read the map, choose the route and find the checkpoints yourself. It suits anyone who wants to explore the landscape actively and solve the puzzle of getting from point to point, rather than follow a set path. The guide is there for safety and support, not narration.

What exactly is an orienteering map, and how is it different from a regular hiking map?

An orienteering map is a highly detailed topographic map that shows terrain contours, vegetation types, water features and small landmarks with precision. It's designed specifically for navigation by compass and terrain reading, so you can spot a rocky outcrop or a change in forest density and match it to the map. A regular hiking map shows trails and major landmarks. An orienteering map shows the landscape itself, which is what lets you choose your own route instead of following a marked path.

Do I need orienteering experience to do this activity?

No. The guide provides an introduction to map reading and navigation techniques at the start, and the route is adapted to your group's level. The activity suits all fitness levels, and children from age 6 are welcome. You'll learn by doing as you navigate between checkpoints.

What's the terrain like in the Calanques near La Ciotat?

The landscape shifts from maquis (low scrubland with aromatic plants typical of Provence) to pine forest as you move through it. Checkpoints are placed along trails, at scenic viewpoints, and among rocky areas, so you'll encounter a mix of open ground and wooded sections. The terrain is uneven but navigable for people of all fitness levels.

What happens if I get lost or can't find a checkpoint?

The guide is with your group throughout the activity and provides support if you need it. The checkpoints are hidden but findable using the map and terrain features. If you're stuck, the guide can offer a hint or help you read the map more effectively, turning it into a learning moment rather than a problem.

Are there other locations besides the Calanques where I can do this activity?

Yes. The operator offers orienteering courses in several Provence landscapes: Sainte Victoire, Alpilles, Luberon and Estérel, in addition to the Calanques. You can choose the location that appeals to you most, and times can be adjusted on request.
