The experience

The day starts with pickup from your hotel or a meeting point in Bordeaux, and your guide begins explaining the vineyard regions, grape varieties and the history that shaped them during the drive to Saint-Émilion. You'll visit three Grand Cru estates (chosen with you according to what you want to taste and learn) touring their technical facilities and cellars before tasting their wines at each stop. The guide can arrange extras like food and wine pairings or tastings of older vintages if you want them, though those are separate from the tour price.

Between château visits, you walk through the medieval village of Saint-Émilion itself, a hilltop settlement built from the 11th century onward and listed as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. The narrow pedestrian streets wind past stone buildings and open onto views of the surrounding vineyards. You'll see the architectural layers of the village, from Romanesque to modern, and have time to photograph the landscape or step into shops and cafés. The village sits at the top of a hill, so the views of the classified vineyards below are the reason most people bring a camera.

The tour runs eight to nine hours and includes private transportation in an air-conditioned van, bottled water, WiFi on board, and your guide's commentary throughout. Entrance fees to the châteaux and the cost of tastings at each property are separate. You pay those on the day. The same applies to any meals or additional drinks you order.

Saint-Émilion is built on a hill with pedestrian streets, so you'll walk at a moderate pace through the village. The terrain is uneven in places, but the walk is manageable for most fitness levels. It's not a strenuous hike.
