Reims Champagne tour: Two family producers, six tastings
Taste six exclusive Champagnes while uncovering family secrets in cozy vineyards
A half-day Champagne tour from Reims visits two family-run producers with a local English-speaking guide, including six tastings and entry fees. The tour runs from 9:20 AM to 1:10 PM with a maximum of eight people, and covers the méthode champenoise from pressing to cellar aging at the first stop, then a shorter visit with the owners at the second estate.
Step-by-step itinerary
Champagne family growers tour
- Meet guide at Reims Centre Station
- Visit first family-run winery with 3 tastings
- Stop in Montagne de Reims vineyards
- Visit second producer with 3 tastings
- Return to Reims Centre
The Experience
Meet your guide at 9:20 AM outside Reims Centre Train Station Tourist Office and head straight into the vineyards of Montagne de Reims. The first producer is a boutique operation where you'll walk through the cellar, see how grapes move from pressing to aging, and taste three cuvées while the owners explain what you're drinking. This part takes real time — it's not a quick stop — so you leave with an actual sense of how the méthode champenoise works and why it matters.
The second visit is shorter but no less direct: you meet the owners, explore their estate, and taste three more cuvées. By 1:10 PM you're back at Reims Centre. Six tastings across two producers means you're not rushing through; the small group (maximum eight people) keeps the pace conversational, and the guide handles the translation so you catch the details.
Wear casual shoes because you'll stop in the vines, and dress for the weather — the tour runs rain or shine. Public transport is nearby if you need it to get to the meeting point. Children under 10 are not suited to this tour, but from age 4 up they're welcome if they can manage the walking and the pace.

What exactly is the méthode champenoise and will I understand it during the tour?
The méthode champenoise is the traditional process of making Champagne: grapes are pressed, fermented in the bottle, aged in the cellar, and riddled by hand to collect sediment before the cork goes in. At the first producer, you'll see the cellar and the aging process firsthand while the owner explains each step, so you leave knowing how the bubbles get there and why it takes years.
How much walking is involved and what are the vineyards like?
You'll stop in the vines at Montagne de Reims and walk through the cellars at both producers, so comfortable casual shoes are essential. The terrain is vineyard ground — not steep, but uneven — and the tour is suitable for all fitness levels as long as you can manage a few hours on your feet with breaks for tastings.
Will I have time to buy a bottle if I fall in love with one of the Champagnes?
The tour does not include time for shopping, but both producers sell their wines on-site, so if you want to purchase after tasting, you can arrange that directly with them before the group moves on.
Is lunch included, and will there be time to eat?
Lunch is not included in the tour, which ends at 1:10 PM. You'll have finished the tastings by then and can find a restaurant in Reims if you want to eat afterward.
What if I'm traveling alone — can I still book this tour?
A minimum of two participants is required for the tour to run. If you book as a solo traveler, A la Francaise will contact you to reschedule for a departure with other guests or offer a refund.
