The experience
You start in Ollioules, a medieval village listed among the Most Beautiful Bypasses of France, where the guide walks you through the alleyways past more than thirty arts and craft shops, ancient stone houses, and the feudal castle perched above. The village sits at the foot of the Mediterranean, and from the castle you can see across the water. On Thursdays and Saturdays, a farmer's market fills the streets. On other days, the narrow passages stay quiet enough to hear the fountains and streams that run through them.
From there, the route follows an ancient road through the Gorges of Ollioules into the Bandol wine region, where you stop to taste the local wines and learn why the grape varieties grown here cannot thrive anywhere else. The landscape shifts to bright Provençal countryside: vineyards, stone walls, and the kind of light that makes you understand why painters came here. Le Castellet sits on top of a hill, a 15th-century feudal village surrounded by those same vineyards, with a promenade at the castle that opens onto views of the St. Baum Ridge and the sea. You have free time to wander the small plazas, visit the craft shops, and sit on a restaurant terrace before lunch.
The final stop is Sanary-sur-mer, a small fishing port with colorful facades and a lively harbor. The guide recounts the village's World War II history: how this small port sheltered people from the Nazis and stood against the Third Reich. The atmosphere is Mediterranean and unhurried, a contrast to the hilltop villages you visited earlier. If you are interested in off-the-beaten-path stops, the guide can substitute a feudal village on top of Gros Cerveau mountain for Ollioules instead.
