The experience
The Palace of Versailles started as a hunting lodge for Louis XIII and became the seat of power when Louis XIV moved his court there in 1682. Your guide takes you past the entry line straight into the palace, where you move through the King and Queen's apartments and the Hall of Mirrors: the room designed to impress with its three hundred and fifty seven mirrors, marble, bronze decorations and gilded sculptures. The Royal Chapel, completed in 1710, and the Royal Opera House, inaugurated in 1770 as Europe's largest concert hall at the time, are also part of the route.
The gardens are the second half of the day. André Le Nôtre spent forty years creating them starting in 1661, leveling spaces, building ponds and the Canal, and arranging flowerbeds and groves in geometric patterns. The 221 sculptures scattered across the grounds make Versailles an open-air museum. Your guide chooses the route based on the season: from June to October, you can catch the musical gardens on Tuesday or the musical fountains show on weekends, depending on what's running when you visit.
Private transport picks you up from your Paris hotel and brings you back after the tour. The five-hour outing moves at the pace of a small group with one guide, and you're free to ask questions or linger at any stop without waiting for a larger group to catch up.

What is the Hall of Mirrors actually like when you walk into it?
The Hall of Mirrors is the palace's most famous room, designed to display royal wealth and power through its three hundred and fifty seven mirrors, marble walls, bronze decorations and gilded sculptures. Your guide explains the room's history and the stories of the people who walked through it.
Can you see the gardens if you visit in winter?
